Season 2024/25

Pianist Biliana Tzinlikova, violinist Klara Flieder and cellist Christophe Pantillon, who all three draw on a wealth of experience as chamber musicians and their many years of musical collaboration, have put together a programme for the season 2024/25 that was diverse in its choice of musical styles, very different chamber music formations and the inclusion of prominent as well as very young guests. The concert series continued to focus on the great standard literature of piano chamber music, enriched by rarities on the fringes of the usual repertoire.

This season, the ECMS once again focussed on providing a platform for young artists; guests included the Trio Bohemo from Prague and the Ineo Quartet from Vienna.

Ineo Quartet

"Enter, begin and flourish" are the three meanings of the Latin word "Ineo", which the quartet has chosen as its name. Since its foundation, the Ineo Quartet has performed several times in Austria, including at the Beethoven Museum, the Museumsquartier and the Austrian Parliament, at the concert series "Echo des Unerhörten" in the Ehrbarsaal in Vienna, as well as at the "Steirisches Kammermusikfestival" in Graz. On an international level, the Ineo Quartet made its debut in Paris, where it performed at the Conservatoire national des arts. They have also been invited to festivals such as "Trame Sonore" in Mantua and the "Sion Festival", where they had the opportunity to perform with artists such as Pablo Barragan, Reinhard Latzko and Lena Belkina. Under the direction of Johannes Meissl (Artis Quartet), they have been working on deepening their understanding of music since their formation. They have been inspired by musicians such as Alfred Brendel, Quatuor Diotima, Francois Kieffer (Quatuor Modigliani) and Günther Pichler (Alban Berg Quartet). Future projects include performances in concert halls such as the Vienna Musikverein, as well as at festivals such as the "Festival St. Gallen" and "Musik im Kontext" in Berlin. A CD recording containing a string quartet by Richard Dünser dedicated to the quartet is planned for summer 2024.

Most recently, the solo recording with the BBC Concert Orchestra London (Sinfonia Concertante by Walter Braunfels) was also awarded the German Record Critics' Prize in 2019.

Aoi Selditz (viola)

Portrait Aoi Selditz with Viola

Aoi Selditz left her Japanese homeland in 2017 out of love for music to study viola in Vienna. Coming to Europe was a kind of return for her: her first solo performance was in 2000, when she played as a violinist at an international festival in Rome. Since then, she has been pursuing her desire to be both a musician and a scientist. She first completed a bachelor's degree in ecology at Kyoto University and has already published articles and given lectures at international conferences worldwide. In 2017, she began her concert studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. At the end of her first year, she was nominated as one of the six semi-finalists of the ARD Competition Munich, where she played with the Munich Chamber Orchestra. In the same year, she was honoured with a prize at the Allegro Vivo International Chamber Music Festival. A year later, she was awarded the special prize at the 13th Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition. In 2019/2020 she was a scholarship holder of the Anny Felbermayer Fund. Since 2017, she has performed at several festivals in Austria with artists such as Benjamin Schmid, Christian Altenburger, Herbert Mayr, Franz Bartolomey, Michel Lethiec and Reinhard Latzko.

The first concert commemorated the 200th anniversary of the birth of this protagonist of Bohemian music with a performance of the famous piano trio by B. Smetana. The Trio Bohémo from Prague performed this chamber music icon alongside a much less frequently played work, "Lonely Angel" by P. Vasks. The second half of the evening was dedicated to the piano quintet by J. Brahms.

The matinee in December presented early romantic piano chamber music in a wide variety of formations. In works by F. Schubert and F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy for piano trio, piano four-hands and piano sextet, the diverse expressive possibilities of these combinations with piano were presented in their profound, intimate, brilliant and entertaining facets.

The third cycle concert in March 2025 was dedicated to the 150th birthday of M. Ravel. The programme focussed on his string quartet, one of the highlights of 20th century string quartet literature, performed by the young Ineo Quartet from Vienna. The rarely performed piano trios by C. Debussy and C. Saint-Saens, a very rich selection of French chamber music was offered.

In the final concert of the series, the clarinet as a chamber music instrument was given a new colour, while Viennese chamber music in the broader sense came into focus: works by the "Viennese by choice" L. v. Beethoven and J. Brahms as well as the clarinet quartet by the Viennese composer W. Rabl, protégé of J. Brahms, concluded the season.
